This year I have made several improvements to my artistic ability, enhancing not just my technical capability, but also my capacity to create a successful work of art. On the technical side, I have definitely improved my recognition of value, rather than create almost purely contour drawings, I have ventured into shadows and highlights creating the sense of form. I have also begun to use color, though not always successfully, a skill which allows the addition of a sort of energy to the piece. Despite my experimentation, I still have along way to go with depicting value through color, specifically I will have to work on color selection and creating gradients that are not monochromatic. I have however improved certain sections of my proportion and figure movement. I dabbled with foreshortening and attempted to draw more dynamic figures, both while drawing sheila and other works in my sketchbook. I also finally realized that I was making torsos too long, and placing knees in strange places. In my fantastic 4 piece I tried to depict a person walking rather than simply posing, and it definitely forced me to visualize a much more functional skeleton and understand muscle movements along pivots. The project also allowed me to improve my composition techniques by looking at strong composition pieces throughout history, then applying them to my pieces. I can definitely use these skills for my independent work next year, because I plan to use a significant amount of color and form. I definitely have a lot of practice to do, but I do believe that I have at least made some strides in my ability to depict colorful forms and place them on a page in an appealing way.
